How to prepare for washing machine installation
Gather the right tools for the job
Like all good jobs, the key is the preparation. Before you start, make sure you have the right tools to hand to make the job as smooth as possible.
- Adjustable wrench – for tightening connections
- Bucket – to catch any excess water when disconnecting hoses
- Spirit level – to ensure the washing machine is balanced
- Hose clips – to secure the water supply and drain hoses
- New water supply hose (if not included with the washing machine)
- Screwdriver – for removing transit bolts and securing parts
- Spanner – to adjust the levelling feet
- Towels and cloths – to clean up any spills
Remove the old washing machine
If you are replacing an old machine, the first step is to remove it with care. Unplug the mains cable from the electrical outlet, then turn off the water supply tap which is connected to the machine. Disconnect the water hose from the water tap, keeping a bucket nearby to catch any remaining water. Then, detach the drain hose from the waste pipe and carefully pull the machine out.
You can arrange to have your old machine collected by a company or your local council, or you can take it to your nearest household waste and recycling centre. If it is still in reasonable working order, consider donating it to a charity shop.
Check the space
If you are installing a new washing machine, you must make sure the new location is suitable. It’s important that the floor is level to stop the machine vibrating. Washing machine installation process
Once you’ve completed the prep work, you’re ready to install your new washing machine. Follow these simple steps:
Position the machine
Gently move your new washing machine into place, ensuring that it’s close enough to the water connections, waste pipe, and electrical outlet.
Loosen the locking nuts by moving them anti-clockwise. Level the machine using the adjustable feet (with a spanner if necessary), ensuring the machine is stable on the floor. Use a spirit level to make sure the machine is properly balanced.
Once you are happy with the final position, tighten the locking nuts by turning them in a clockwise direction.
Connect the water supply
Most washing machines need to have a cold water supply hose connected. Attach the inlet hose to the cold water tap, tightening it securely in a clockwise direction. If your washing machine has a hot water inlet, connect the other hose in the same way. Use a hose clip to prevent leaks.
Connect the drain hose
Attach the drain hose securely to the waste pipe. If it’s long, try to avoid too many bends or kinks, as it can affect drainage.
Test the machine
Once all water connections are in place, plug in the washing machine and turn on the water supply. Run a test cycle (without laundry) to check for leaks and ensure everything is working properly. If there are any leaks, double-check the hose connections and tighten them.
